You’re probably always searching for products that are going to work for your hair. I’m just like you, except I have access to all of the products that I could ever want, which leaves me with a cabinet full of products that I use for all different reasons, but mostly I buy new things to try out before I suggest them to anyone. I personally need to try everything before I can justify telling you that I like it. Even if the whole world is screaming about some hair cream that they love, I won’t even bother telling anyone until I’ve tried it myself. At the end of this list, I’ll suggest products that I have not tried myself, but have heard about from clients & friends who have the type of hair texture that works with these products! You can navigate this by hair type, or type of product. It’s a little library of all of the products I love, and I’ll keep adding to it as I try new things, so make sure to stop back over here from time to time to see what else I’ve tried that might work for you!
Product Brands that I love:
- Cult & King: I love this brand because they’re a company dedicated to making a difference. Their goal is to defend the planet, support independent salons & barbershops (like me!), and creating great products that work without poisoning the people who use them! So many hair products available now are so bad for our hair and bodies, it’s honestly shocking that they’re still allowed to sell them. Cult & King is gender inclusive, and a lot of their products are extremely versatile – they can be used on your hair AND skin because they’re all Vegan products with the exception of the Original Balm and Style which have organic beeswax in them! I seriously love what this brand is doing for the hair industry and I could talk about how much I love them and why all day but that would probably bore you, so I’ll link their website for you to visit if you want to know more! P.S. if you want to get some products from them, that link will give me a little percentage of your sale, so you’ll be helping me out, too!
- Innersense Organic Beauty: This brand is so wholesome and focuses so much on mental health, and product environmental impact which I love! The directions on the products remind you to take a deep breath and get centered before worrying about how to apply the product to your hair. I love that they’re reminding us to be more present in a world where we’re constantly rushing onto the next thing. Their products are created with ingredients that are ethically harvested and sourced from trusted, transparent plantations, orchards and farms from around the world. Products are formulated through conscious chemistry; cold-pressed, distilled or otherwise processed without synthetics to preserve purity. Everything is formulated free of phthalates, ethoxylates, sulfates, silicones, 1,4 dioxane, parabens, petro compounds, propylene and butylene glycol, PEG, MEA, TEA, MIA, EDTA artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. All products are gluten free, cruelty free, and non-GMO. You can purchase some of their products in the salon with me, or you can buy directly from their website!
- Leaf & Flower: This brand is revolutionizing the way the haircare industry sees products. This clinically proven system uses CBD and other cannabinoids that work directly with your body’s endocannabinoid system to improve your hair and scalp health. I also really just love the way it smells, and feels in hair. The instant damage correction shampoo (dark blue bottle) is one of my favorites for thick, frizzy hair specifically because it lathers really nicely and actually works in tandem with the frizz remedy spray to create the smoothest blowout that usually lasts a few days!
Products for every texture & density
- Leave In Spray/Detangle Spray: Pureology Color Fanatic Spray – Use as a heat protectant, leave in conditioner/detangler, UV protectant, hair moisturizer, frizz control, restyling spray (for curls), and frizz control.
- Alternate Leave-In/Detangle Spray: Cult & King Tonik – Has 23 botanical ingredients that condition your scalp, follicle and hair better than any synthetic product. Use on damp towel dried hair & scalp or beard before styling.
- Toner/Hair pH balancing spray: Cult & King Superwater – An antioxidant toner for hair and skin. Yep, you can use this as a toner for your face, too! Use to moisturize, balance, protect, prep for styling, and refresh curls. Naturally microbial and great for moisturizing.
- Moisturizing Balm: Cult & King Balm (Vegan option available as well!) – Use as a leave in hair conditioner & skin moisturizer. This is the best lip balm ever. Apply to hair either wet or dry to polish, detangle, and tame frizz. Vegan Balm is a bit lighter, so use less product with the Original Balm and work up to more if needed. Can be used as a shaving aid as well as beard butter (just like a beard oil, but better!)
- Dry shampoo/volumizing powder: Cult & King Hair Powder (dry shampoo & root volume powder) This dry shampoo comes in two colors, light & dark. If you’re blonde or have very light hair, light is good for you, otherwise you’ll want the dark one! I have reddish hair, and I use the dark one. It blends well and creates a lovely amount of volume on days when my hair is looking kinda greasy at the roots. I also love applying this after a fresh blowout to add extra volume. I carry the small size in my purse for touchups if I need it! So many dry shampoos contain talc or propane/isobutane and are terrible for your scalp health and the environment, this one only contains the good stuff. The dark color even contains cocoa and smells so yummy (in a good way).
- Hair Masque/Deep Conditioner: Innersense Hydrating Hair Mask – My favorite all-texture hydrating mask. It’s great for that extra boost when your hair needs it. I suggest using it once a week, or every other week if you only wash your hair once a week!
- Another Alternate Leave-In/Detangle Spray: Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave In Conditioner – This is my favorite leave in spray for normal to thick hair types that need extra hydration after washing. I apply it right after the shower before I apply any of my other products.
- Hair Moisturizing Cream: R+Co Waterfall or High Dive. They’re both great and deliver lightweight moisturizing results that protect your hair from frizz throughout the day. High Dive is a little heavier, so if your hair is fine-medium you’ll probably like Waterfall best!
- Scalp Scrub: Innersense True Enlightenment Scalp Scrub. This scrub is made to cleanse impurities from your scalp before you apply shampoo and conditioner. Sometimes we need a bit more than a basic shampoo to do the job. A little goes a long way. Scrub into your wet hair in the shower & keep going until you feel the crystals dissolving, then rinse & follow with a good shampoo!
- Shampoo: Innersense Color Awakening Hairbath. This shampoo smells so clean and leaves my scalp and hair feeling totally refreshed. It’s color safe & lightly moisturizing with a formula that is anti-inflammatory and enhances UVB protection.
- Conditioner: Innersense Color Radiance Conditioner: This daily conditioner is thick but in the best way! It feels so luxurious and rich, it truly feels like I’m treating myself (or my clients) to a nice experience. The ingredients provide a balance of Omega 6 Fatty Acids and Vitamin E, A, and K which are great for shine, hair follicle stimulation, and curl management.
Fine hair
- Shampoo: Innersense Pure Harmony Hairbath. This shampoo smells so clean (think citrus with a splash of green tea) and makes your hair feel squeaky clean which gives you great volume! It’s made with only good, wholesome ingredients and nothing that could strip it or dry it out.
- Conditioner: Innersense Pure Inspiration Conditioner. This conditioner adds the perfect amount of moisture without the weight of a traditional conditioner. It’s the best I’ve found for a balance of protein (rice bran oil) and moisture (aloe) for fine hair.
- Leave-In Spray/Detangle Spray: Pureology Color Fanatic Spray. If you’ve had a hair appointment with me, I’ve probably used this on your hair. It’s my favorite all-in-one spray. It does everything you need a styling product to do for your fine, flyaway hair. Hydration, heat protectant, frizz & static prevention, UVA/UVB sun protection, color protection, and if you have curls, this is a great refreshing spray!
- Alternate Leave-In Spray/Detangle Spray: Cult & King Tonik. I adore Cult & King. If it was an actual cult, I’d probably willingly join lol I’m kidding. Kinda. This spray feels so good on my scalp. It has 23 botanical ingredients that are blended together to make the most refreshing scalp & hair spray I’ve ever used. If your hair & scalp need a reset button, this is it. If you’re a plant nerd like me, you’ll love the ingredients list for their products. Spray into your hair after washing & conditioning (post-shower) and scrub into your scalp to feel the tingle & get some great volume!
- Scalp Scrub: R+Co Crystal Halo. This scalp scrub is great if you have fine hair and feel like you need to wash constantly. Apply before shampoo to scrub off all of the impurities on your scalp and hair. Keep scrubbing & massaging into your scalp until all of the exfoliants dissolve, then rinse & follow with your normal shampoo.
- Deep Conditioner/Hair Masque: Innersense Hydrating Hair Mask. This mask is great for fine hair because it delivers a great amount of moisture & hydration without weighing your hair down! Use once a week, or every other week if you wash your hair less than 3x per week.
- Dry Shampoo/Volume Powder: Cult & King Hair Powder. This dry shampoo comes in two colors, light & dark. If you’re blonde or have very light hair, light is good for you, otherwise you’ll want the dark one! I have red hair, and I use the dark one.
- Volumizing Mousse: R+Co Rodeo Star OR Innersense “I Create Lift Volumizing Foam”. Both of these make the list because I like them equally. R+Co mousse is more like the texture of a traditional mousse and can be applied from the bottle to your roots directly as a foam section by section. However, the Innersense is more like a soft foam, and I prefer to activate it in my hands before applying to the roots & hair.
- Shine & Hydration Lotion: R+Co Waterfall. This hair cream is so light and smells so fresh. It just feels so good to apply, and keeps your hair from getting staticky throughout the day. Apply after washing your hair (post-shower) and after your leave in spray. It doesn’t weigh your hair down like so many products do!
- Texturizing: Cult & King Jelly. If you have fine hair and love a bit of grit or texture in your hair, you’ll love Cult & King Jelly. It’s great for wavy/curly hair, and adds volume to your roots with the grit it delivers. It’s like salt spray but so much better for your hair.
Thick hair
Please note that this list is for thick hair density. If you blowdry or heat style your hair regularly, this list is for you! If you have thick hair but you prefer to let your natural texture come out to play, check out my wavy or curly lists below as well!
- Shampoo: Leaf & Flower CBD Instant Damage Correction Shampoo. Trust me, I know your hair probably isn’t damaged, but I like to treat thick hair like it is, because it needs the same amount of moisture. The L&F Repair line is like a God send for thick hair. This shampoo lathers so well, even in the thickest hair I’ve worked on and smells like a creamsicle which sounds weird but is so satisfying IRL.
- Conditioner: Innersense Color Radiance Daily Conditioner. This is a new update. Normally I would tell you to use everything from the Leaf & Flower Repair line, but this conditioner contains so many good fatty proteins and vitamins that fill the holes in your cuticle & seal it right up.
- I’ll be adding more to this list as soon as I get my ish together after vacation!
